Lewisham's Speaking Up Group is being heard.

Supported by Entelechy, the Speaking Up Group of about a dozen people with learning disabilities, come together to talk about how things are for people with learning disabilities in Lewisham and to participate in the work of Lewisham's Learning Disability Partnership Board.

Meeting fortnightly, the group talk about concerns and how things can get better and how the Partnership Board can help make that happen.

In addition Entelechy is working in partnership with residential service providers in a way that ensures people with complex needs (severe and profound disabilities) are heard.

Less conventional methods of communication are demanded to promote the success of this work. Entelechy leads the way in finding new ways for people express themselves, bringing together the worlds of art and support.

The Nexus Project

Entelechy has been commissioned by residential service provider Nexus to establish a user forum for their residents with learning disabilities and those who use their outreach services.

Many of Nexus service users have high support needs and do not use conventional ways of communicating their concerns, needs and wishes.

Group discussions and conventional meetings aren't of relevance to many participants so the project has been exploring other ways of listening to people's voices and identifying their concerns.

Video is being used as a central currency in enabling group members to share aspects of their lives with other members of the group. It will form a natural way of feeding back concerns and aspirations to Nexus managers.

Digital cameras and new state of the art editing technology make it possible for 'moving picture postcards' to be made. These can be viewed anywhere, courtesy of portable laptop computers. This flexibility is enabling the project to work with people on the move in their everyday situations.

The project works alongside group members in their front rooms and kitchens, local cafes, arts centres, herb gardens - ordinary and extraordinary settings to exchange and conversation.

The objectives of the programme are : ·

  • To consult with services users on proposed developments and changes to services
  • To find out views of users about quality of current service delivery
  • To enable services users to make recommendations for service changes and improvements
  • To enable Nexus to feedback on how they have been able to incorporate views and recommendations of service users
