Entelechy’s Saturday Morning Arts Club meets regularly at Downham Library in south Lewisham. Club members are young people between the ages of 12 and 18. Most of the group members are multiply disadvantaged. They all have more than one disability, have profound learning difficulties, have difficulties communicating, need high levels of support and may have additional sensory impairments and complex health needs.

The club is an opportunity young people to meet with up with friends and a team of Entelechy artists working together on music, dance and video projects. The work has been developed in collaboration with Lewisham Libraries Service and Greenvale School. Entelechy has recruited teaching assistants from the school to support people’s individual support needs. We provide a door to door transport support to help families access the programme. The work is supported by Lewisham’s ‘Aiming High for Disabled Children’ programme. The club is linked to Entelechy’s Family programme creating opportunities for families to take part in arts activities in venues across south London including Southbank Centre and Siobhan Davies Studios

A multi-stranded programme of creative encounters working with older people aged between 60 and 100 years old. Musicians, dance and spoken word artists work with active older peer mentors to develop and support work with frail older, old people.

Entelechy has established a weekly programme of dance, music and story-telling events with older, old people living in the Deptford and New Cross neighbourhoods of south east London, in close collaboration with a number of local groups including the Age Well Fun Club, Manley Court Residential Home, Deptford Methodist Mission and The Albany Centre.

The programme works with the generation now in their late 80s and 90s who have often been given additional years by medical science. For many this extra time is lived in loneliness and isolation. Space is created for Entelechy Artists to take time to listen to people’s individual needs, supporting people to nurture their talents and interests.

“I’m so proud of myself. I’ve never done anything like this before”

Dance events mix live music with video, theatre, dance performance, story-telling, tea, cake, social dancing and singing. Programmes are curated by older members of Entelechy’s Seven Ages Company. Guest artists at recent events have included Kora player and multi-instrumentalist Tunde Jegede, legendary Jazz Hoofer Will Gains and the unforgettable Ida Barr.

Events have been developed in collaboration with Lewisham Homebound Library Service to support isolated older people to become involved in arts activities happening in their communities.

Older performers from Entelechy have built little portable theatre boxes which contain objects that act as prompts to stories from people’s childhoods in the 1940s and 50s. It’s an extremely portable and engaging form of one-on-one theatre. The elders company have been trying out the idea giving performances in local primary schools, Bellingham Summer Fete and in The Clore Ballroom at Southbank Centre.

Night Flights is an ongoing programme led by young people who have complex disabilities working in collaboration with Entelechy video and dance artists. The project aim is to design environments where young people can communicate their aspirations, interests and life experiences.

If you are unable to use words how can you communicate your experiences to others? How can you have a fuller impact on decisions and choices that effect your life? Young people with physical/learning disabilities and or a sensory impairment rarely have choice and control about their day to day lives and long term life choices.

Night Flights is a stream of short term projects. Work has included making exhibitions and installations in galleries and arts centres. Video’s have been projected in cafes, in galleries, onto street hoardings and in people’s front rooms.

Ambient Jam is Entelechy’s unique programme of movement, music and sensory based work with adults and young people who have profound and multiple disabilities. Fortnightly sessions, based at the Albany Centre in Deptford, provide a regular point of contact for participants, dance artists, musicians and volunteers.

Many company members who have complex disabilities may not be able to see, read or hear for or by themselves. Physical disabilities combined with learning disabilities prevent them from expressing in words their experiences, interests and needs. Movement , the body and its senses provide the ways and means for expression and communication.

Within the regular movement and multi-sensory workshops and the short term projects that arise from them, a creative dialogue takes place between dancers, musicians and movers with and without disabilities.
